Endocarditis refers to inflammation caused by microbial infection of the endocardial surface of the heart. It is generally caused by bacteria, fungi, or other microorganisms such as viruses, which directly invade the endocardium through the bloodstream, leading to inflammation.
Heart valves are the most commonly affected sites in endocarditis, but the infection can also occur at ventricular septal defects, chordae tendineae, and the endocardium of the heart wall.
