The foramen ovale is a physiological channel in the interatrial septum during the embryonic period. Normally, it fuses around 2 months after birth. If it fails to fuse after 1 year of age, it forms a patent foramen ovale (PFO).
Even in adults, 20% to 25% of the population have an incompletely closed foramen ovale. PFO is currently the most common congenital heart anomaly in adults.
