Prostate biopsy

Prostate biopsy involves examining collected prostate tissue samples under a microscope to detect cancer cells or other abnormal lesions. During a prostate biopsy, a doctor uses a thin needle (biopsy needle) to collect small prostate tissue samples via the rectum, perineum, or urethra. Prostate biopsy is an invasive procedure. Therefore, doctors generally do not directly recommend it to patients. It is usually considered for diagnosing prostate cancer when: Blood tests show high levels of prostate-specific antigen (PSA), a specific marker for prostate cancer. Sometimes, the examination is performed after a lump is detected during a digital rectal examination.
