Congenital anomalies of the bile duct

Congenital malformations of the biliary tract refer to congenital developmental abnormalities of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts. In the 4th week of embryonic development, a ventral outgrowth appears from the primitive foregut, which later develops into the liver, bile ducts, and gallbladder. If development is abnormal, congenital malformations of the biliary tract and gallbladder may form, such as agenesis, stenosis, or dilation. Common congenital malformations of the biliary tract include congenital biliary atresia and congenital choledochal cysts.
