Portal vein thrombosis

Portal vein thrombosis refers to the formation of blood clots in the main trunk of the portal vein, superior mesenteric vein, inferior mesenteric vein, or splenic vein. This can lead to portal vein obstruction, increased portal vein pressure, and intestinal congestion, making it a significant cause of prehepatic portal hypertension. This condition often occurs secondary to chronic liver disease and neoplastic disorders, primarily manifesting as severe abdominal pain, abdominal distension, and vomiting.
