Arterial embolism

Arterial embolism refers to the detachment of a thrombus or atherosclerotic plaque originating from within the heart chamber or the proximal arterial wall, or the entry of an exogenous embolus into an artery. This embolus is then carried by the bloodstream to a distal location, causing obstruction of the distal arterial lumen and leading to acute ischemia in the limb, organ, or tissue supplied by that artery. This condition is common in the elderly, those who are bedridden for extended periods, and individuals with cardiovascular diseases or diabetes. The main symptoms include pain or numbness at the site of the embolism.
