Lower extremity lymphedema refers to tissue swelling in the legs due to impaired lymphatic fluid return. This is a slowly progressive lymphatic system disease.
When this disease occurs, lymphatic fluid accumulates in the subcutaneous tissue, leading to fibrous proliferation and fat hardening. In later stages, limb swelling, skin thickening, roughening, and elephantiasis-like hardening appear.
