Simple lower extremity varicose veins are a common disease in vascular surgery, with a high incidence in the general population, particularly among women and the elderly.
The affected vessels include the great saphenous vein, small saphenous vein, and their branches. The diseased veins appear elongated, dilated, and tortuous. In cases with a longer disease course, increased skin pigmentation in the lower extremities, thrombophlebitis, and even skin ulcers may occur.
