Gastric stump carcinoma

Gastric stump carcinoma refers to a new cancer that develops in the remaining stomach several years after a gastrectomy for a benign gastric lesion. Carcinogenesis generally occurs more than 5 years after surgery, and the incidence increases with time, with most cases occurring 10 to 15 years after surgery (20 to 25 years being the peak incidence period). The incidence of gastric stump carcinoma is approximately 2% to 10% (another estimate is 1% to 5%), which is significantly higher than the incidence of gastric cancer in the general population. The main symptoms include irregular upper abdominal pain, bloating, and loss of appetite.
