Teratoma

Teratoma is a tumor originating from germ cells. It is named for its unusual appearance, as it may contain components such as hair, teeth, and bone. This condition is common in children and young women. The most common site for teratomas in females is the ovary, while in males, it is most frequently found in the testis. Teratomas are broadly classified into two types: One type is mature teratoma, which is a benign tumor, but has a 2% to 4% chance of transforming into malignancy. The other type is immature teratoma, which is malignant and may recur or metastasize to other sites after surgery. Generally, benign teratomas are more common than malignant ones. Teratomas found in the ovaries of females are mostly benign, while those found in the testes of males are mostly malignant.
