Imperforate hymen

Imperforate hymen, also known as hymenal atresia, is a common female reproductive tract developmental anomaly. During normal embryonic development, the vaginal plate, derived from the endoderm in female fetuses, canalizes to form a lumen. The lower part of this lumen is covered by a thin membrane called the hymen. After 7 months of gestation, the hymen normally perforates, connecting the lumen with the vaginal vestibule. If this perforation fails to occur during the embryonic stage, imperforate hymen results.
