Detailed description
Oligospermia refers to a condition where the total sperm count (or concentration) is below the lower reference limit in 2-3 routine semen analyses. According to the 5th edition of the WHO (World Health Organization) reference values, this means a sperm concentration of <15×10^6/ml or a total sperm count of <39×10^6/ml.
Based on WHO standards, oligospermia can be further classified into:
Mild oligospermia: 10 ≤ sperm concentration < 15×10^6/ml.
Moderate oligospermia: 5 ≤ sperm concentration < 10×10^6/ml.
Severe oligospermia: 1 ≤ sperm concentration < 5×10^6/ml.
Profound oligospermia: sperm concentration < 1×10^6/ml.
Cryptozoospermia: no sperm are found in a fresh semen smear, but sperm can be detected in the centrifuged pellet.
