Infectious mononucleosis

Infectious mononucleosis is a clinical syndrome of lymphocyte proliferation primarily caused by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. It typically presents as an acute, self-limiting illness characterized by irregular fever, pharyngitis, and lymphadenopathy. EBV infection is highly prevalent in the population, with over 90% of adults infected. However, most infections are asymptomatic, and only about 10% of infected individuals develop infectious mononucleosis. The disease has been reported worldwide, can occur year-round, and is mostly sporadic.
