Whooping cough

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is an acute, highly contagious respiratory infection caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis. The disease is characterized by paroxysmal, spasmodic coughing followed by a deep, high-pitched inspiratory "whoop." The name "whooping cough" reflects the prolonged course of the illness, which can last for several months. In severe cases, pertussis can be life-threatening. Pertussis primarily affects children. Effective prevention can be achieved through vaccination with the DTaP vaccine.
