For newborns, a birth weight below 2500g is defined as low birth weight. Among these, a weight between 1000-1499g is classified as very low birth weight, and a weight less than 1000g is classified as extremely low birth weight.
They generally present with less subcutaneous fat, poor thermoregulation, and weaker respiratory and metabolic functions. They are particularly susceptible to infections, and their mortality rate is significantly higher than that of newborns with normal weight. Their intellectual development may also be affected.
