Meckel's diverticulum

Meckel's diverticulum is a special type of digestive tract diverticulum. It is formed due to incomplete degeneration of the vitelline duct, often occurring at the antimesenteric border of the terminal ileum. It is a true diverticulum and often contains ectopic tissue, most commonly gastric mucosa, followed by pancreatic tissue. The incidence is about 2%, with a male-to-female ratio of 2:1 to 7.5:1. Only 4% to 6% of affected children develop symptoms, and children under 5 years old account for about 56.4% of cases. The condition itself is often asymptomatic, with symptoms typically appearing only when complications occur.
