Phantom limb pain

Phantom limb pain (PLP) refers to the phenomenon where patients subjectively feel the presence of a removed limb after amputation and experience severe pain. It is one of the most common postoperative complications in amputees. Research data show that the incidence of phantom limb pain after amputation is approximately 42.2% to 78.8%. The two peak periods for the onset of phantom limb pain are within 1 month after amputation and after 1 year.
