Sciatic nerve injury

The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the human body, composed of nerve roots from L4 to S3. It innervates many important muscles in the lower limbs, including the biceps femoris in the posterior thigh (whose main functions are knee flexion and hip extension) and all muscles below the knee. Sciatic nerve injury is a clinical condition caused by complete transection or partial damage to the sciatic nerve trunk or its branches due to various reasons such as trauma to the buttocks or thigh, leading to numbness in the buttocks or lower limbs and restricted motor function. Depending on the site of injury, it can lead to paralysis of the corresponding innervated muscles, impaired movement of the knee and ankle joints, and can also result in lower limb deformities and gait abnormalities.
