Pterygium

Pterygium is one of the most common ocular surface diseases in clinical practice. "Pterygium" refers to a fleshy growth, and pterygium is a fleshy growth resembling an insect's wing. It typically grows on the surface of the eyeball, extending from the white part of the eye towards the black part. It is a chronic inflammatory lesion caused by external irritation to the eye, leading to localized fibrovascular tissue proliferation of the bulbar conjunctiva. This disease is common among individuals who work outdoors for extended periods, with a higher incidence in males than females. The prevalence is relatively high in rural areas, high-altitude regions, and low-latitude areas, and the incidence increases with age. The main symptoms include red eyes, dry eyes, foreign body sensation, and decreased vision. It can affect one or both eyes.
