Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous

Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) is a congenital ocular anomaly present at birth, caused by the failure of the primary vitreous to regress normally, leading to its proliferation behind the lens. It predominantly occurs in full-term infants, with a higher incidence in males, and is unilateral in 90% of cases. The mothers of affected children typically have no abnormal medical history during pregnancy.
