Scleral staphyloma refers to a purple-black, grape-like outward bulging of the sclera along with the uvea. It is caused by congenital defects or pathological damage to the sclera, which weakens its resistance, leading to the outward bulging of the sclera and uvea under normal or elevated intraocular pressure.
Based on the extent of the bulging, it is divided into partial scleral staphyloma and total scleral staphyloma.
