Entropion

Entropion is an eyelid condition characterized by the inward turning of the eyelid margin towards the eyeball. Based on the etiology, entropion can be classified into the following four types: Congenital entropion: Primarily affects infants and young children, with a higher incidence in Asians, often occurring in the medial part of the lower eyelid. It is usually accompanied by other abnormalities, such as tarsal dysgenesis or microphthalmia, and can coexist with congenital epicanthus or lower eyelid epiblepharon. Involutional entropion: The most common type clinically. Primarily seen in elderly individuals, mostly affecting the lower eyelid. Spastic entropion: An acute condition caused by excessive contraction of the orbicularis oculi muscle due to ocular irritation or inflammation. If left untreated, it can develop into persistent entropion. Cicatricial entropion: Primarily caused by scar formation in the posterior lamella of the eyelid due to various reasons. Mild entropion may be asymptomatic, while severe cases can present with conjunctival hyperemia, photophobia, tearing, stinging pain, and blepharospasm.
