Vitreous liquefaction

Vitreous liquefaction is caused by the degradation of hyaluronic acid within the vitreous, collapse and condensation of the collagen fiber framework, and exudation of water, leading to the degeneration of the gel into a liquid, hence the name vitreous liquefaction. Vitreous liquefaction typically occurs after the age of 40, starting in the central part of the vitreous with small liquefaction cavities, which then progressively expand.
