Detailed description
Corneal arcus, also known as arcus senilis, is an age-related degenerative and fatty change of the cornea that occurs after the age of 40. It refers to the grayish-white annular opacity formed by the deposition of lipids (cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides) in the peripheral cornea. It commonly occurs in older individuals, hence the name arcus senilis.
The incidence of arcus senilis gradually increases with age, with nearly 100% of individuals having arcus senilis after the age of 80.
