Retinal concussion and contusion refer to a condition characterized by retinal edema and decreased vision that occurs shortly after an eye contusion. The shockwave transmitted from the impact site damages the outer retina, the pigment epithelium is damaged, its barrier function is disrupted, and extracellular edema occurs, leading to retinal opacity and a decrease in vision, potentially to 0.1.
