Periodontitis

Periodontal tissues are the tissues surrounding the teeth, primarily functioning to support, stabilize, and nourish the teeth. They include the alveolar bone, gingiva, periodontal ligament, and cementum. Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation that occurs in the periodontal tissues. The inflammation can affect the gingival soft tissues and the deeper supporting tissues of the teeth. In severe cases, it can lead to tooth loosening or loss. This disease commonly affects individuals over 35 years of age. Aggressive periodontitis, however, is more prevalent in adolescents. The main symptoms include red, swollen, and bleeding gums accompanied by halitosis. As the inflammation spreads, periodontal abscesses and tooth loosening may occur.
