The mastoid process is a part of the body located behind the ear, between the hairline. It is situated about one finger's width behind the earlobe, where a prominent bone can be felt. The lowest protruding part of this bone is the mastoid process. Acute mastoiditis is an acute purulent inflammation of the mastoid process, particularly the bone, commonly seen in children. It is characterized by foul-smelling discharge from the ear, headache, and fever.
