Pharyngeal muscle spasm is an intermittent, rhythmic contraction of the soft palate or pharyngeal constrictor muscles, mostly caused by lesions in the central brainstem. When this disease occurs, patients may experience symptoms such as dysphagia, trismus, choking, and difficulty opening the mouth. In severe cases, patients may experience shortness of breath, dyspnea, and asphyxia.
