Basal cell carcinoma, also known as basal cell epithelioma, is a skin tumor originating from the basal layer of the epidermis and its appendages. Although generally considered low-risk, it can cause local infiltration, invasion, and ulceration of the skin and surrounding structures. Surgical excision is usually curative.
