Sickle cell disease

Sickle cell disease, also known as sickle cell anemia or hemoglobin S disease, is a genetic hemoglobinopathy characterized by abnormally shaped red blood cells that resemble sickles. These sickle-shaped red blood cells are more fragile and prone to destruction than normal red blood cells, leading to anemia and other symptoms. This disease is more prevalent among people of African and American descent. Key symptoms include anemia, hemolysis, and pain. Intellectual disability may occur in young patients.
