Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by infection with *Toxoplasma gondii*. It is distributed worldwide, with approximately 30% of the global population potentially infected with *Toxoplasma gondii*, and about 7.9% in China, mostly asymptomatic. The manifestations of toxoplasmosis are complex and diverse. The vast majority of infected individuals have no obvious symptoms, which is called latent infection; a small number of patients may develop very severe symptoms, which can even be life-threatening. *Toxoplasma gondii* parasitizes nucleated cells in humans and animals, mainly invading the eyes, brain, heart, liver, lymph nodes, and other parts, which can cause toxoplasmic hepatitis, ocular toxoplasmosis, toxoplasmic encephalitis, etc. Infection in pregnant women can affect fetal development and lead to severe malformations.
