Glossopharyngeal neuralgia

Glossopharyngeal neuralgia is a paroxysmal, severe pain caused by irritation of the glossopharyngeal nerve. It has a sudden onset and manifests as sharp, knife-like, or electric shock-like pain, primarily occurring on one side of the tongue base, pharynx, tonsils, ear root, and posterior mandible. The incidence is higher in males than in females, and the typical age of onset is over 40 years.
