Intercostal neuralgia

Intercostal nerves are the main nerves of the chest. They originate from the thoracic spinal cord, extending bilaterally from the intervertebral foramina of the thoracic vertebrae, passing through the intercostal spaces to the anterior chest. They are responsible for sensation in most areas of the chest wall and the movement of the intercostal muscles. Intercostal neuralgia is pain in the area innervated by the intercostal nerves. It can be divided into the following two types: Primary intercostal neuralgia: Very rare, with an unknown cause. Secondary intercostal neuralgia: More common. The main symptom is pain distributed in a band-like pattern across the chest or abdomen.
