Acute leukemia is a disease characterized by the rapid proliferation of human hematopoietic stem cells within a short period. Normal hematopoietic stem cells in the bone marrow undergo abnormal changes, and these altered cells, known as leukemia cells, proliferate extensively and accumulate in the bone marrow, suppressing the body's normal hematopoietic function. Based on the type of hematopoietic stem cells that undergo abnormal changes, acute leukemia can be divided into two types: Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML): This typically refers to myeloid cells originating from bone marrow tissue that fail to differentiate normally. These undifferentiated cells continuously accumulate in the bone marrow tissue, leading to the onset of the disease. It is more common in young and middle-aged adults. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL): This is caused by the continuous accumulation of immature lymphocytes in the bone marrow. It is clinically less common than acute myeloid leukemia. The incidence of this disease is slightly higher in males than in females. The main symptoms include anemia, bleeding, and fever. Some patients present with skin lesions or bone and joint pain as their initial symptoms.

Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS), also known as hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), is a hyperinflammatory response syndrome caused by genetic or acquired immune dysregulation. Based on the etiology, HPS can be divided into two main categories: Primary (familial) hemophagocytic syndrome (FHPS): More common in neonates. It is a genetic disorder, and patients often carry HPS-related gene defects, diagnosed by genetic testing. Secondary (reactive) hemophagocytic syndrome (SHPS): More common in adults, but can also occur in children. It is often associated with underlying diseases such as infections, tumors, or rheumatic conditions, which trigger immune system activation, ultimately leading to a series of reactive diseases. If currently known HPS-related genes are not detected, but the primary disease is also unclear, it is also classified as secondary HPS. The main symptoms include persistent fever, hepatosplenomegaly, pancytopenia, and the presence of hemophagocytosis in bone marrow, liver, spleen, and lymph node tissues.

Leukocytes, commonly known as white blood cells, are a type of blood cell found in the blood. They play a role in fighting off pathogens and purifying the blood, making them an important cellular component of blood. An increase in leukocytes can be seen as a self-protective response of the body. Leukocytosis is actually an abnormal condition that patients or their families cannot or can hardly detect, and it is often discovered only during a routine blood test. There are many reasons for an elevated white blood cell count. Leukocytosis can occur due to physiological reasons such as strenuous exercise, emotional fluctuations, late pregnancy in women, after a full meal, and in extreme heat or cold environments. In addition, various diseases such as infections (e.g., common cold, pneumonia, enteritis) and hematological disorders can also lead to an elevated white blood cell count. The most common causes are infection and abnormal bone marrow hematopoietic function.
