Basilar artery stenosis refers to a condition where the lumen of the basilar artery narrows, affecting blood supply to the posterior circulation of the brain. This can lead to acute or chronic cerebral ischemia and hypoxia, resulting in transient ischemic attacks or strokes. It typically appears after the age of 40, with a high incidence between 60 and 80 years old, and is more common in males. It is prevalent in individuals with hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and those who smoke. Symptoms may include dizziness and nausea.
Transient ischemic attack
Transient ischemic attack (TIA) refers to a transient neurological dysfunction caused by local cerebral or retinal ischemia, which can fully recover within 24 hours, and no lesions can be found on imaging examinations (CT or MRI). Clinically, the symptoms of the vast majority (97%) of TIA patients can be relieved within 3 hours. If the symptoms last for more than 3 hours, up to 95% of TIA patients will show imaging and pathological changes. This disease is common in middle-aged and elderly people, with more males than females. The onset is often sudden, and the symptoms are short-lived. The main symptoms include sudden numbness or weakness on one side of the body, sudden vision loss, sudden speech impairment, and sudden falls.
