Corneal degeneration is a regressive change in corneal tissue caused by certain pre-existing diseases, leading to a decline in corneal function. There are many types of corneal degeneration, including arcus senilis, band keratopathy, Terrien's marginal degeneration, and corneal amyloidosis. Among these, arcus senilis is common, while other types are rare.

Corneal arcus
Corneal arcus, also known as arcus senilis, is an age-related degenerative and fatty change of the cornea that occurs after the age of 40. It refers to the grayish-white annular opacity formed by the deposition of lipids (cholesterol, cholesterol esters, phospholipids, and triglycerides) in the peripheral cornea. It commonly occurs in older individuals, hence the name arcus senilis. The incidence of arcus senilis gradually increases with age, with nearly 100% of individuals having arcus senilis after the age of 80.

When the iris texture behind the scar is visible through it, it is called corneal nebula, primarily manifesting as blurred vision or obstructed vision.

Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma is a malignant tumor that occurs in the eye tissues, and its incidence is relatively high. Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma grows slowly and generally does not metastasize. However, the tumor is prone to infiltrate the eye tissues, thereby destroying eye function, leading to decreased vision, and even loss of vision. It mostly occurs at the limbus in the palpebral fissure area, the junction of the eyelid skin and conjunctiva, or the lacrimal caruncle in the inner canthus, and is rarely seen in the non-exposed areas of the conjunctiva.
