Autism, also known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a pervasive developmental disorder characterized by varying degrees of social interaction deficits, communication impairments, restricted interests, and stereotyped and repetitive behaviors. It typically manifests in infancy or early childhood (before 3 years of age) and is often accompanied by other non-specific issues such as phobias, sleep and eating disturbances, anger, and self-directed aggression.

Inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs) are genetic disorders that cause metabolic problems. Most IEMs are caused by defective genes that result in enzyme deficiencies. There are hundreds of different types of IEMs, and their symptoms, treatments, and prognoses vary. Some IEMs are inherited, while others are caused by acquired gene mutations. The onset of IEMs is not limited to newborns but can occur at any age.
