Transverse vaginal septum

Vaginal septum refers to an abnormal development of the urogenital sinus structure during the embryonic period, resulting in a partially or completely obstructed vagina. The septum can occur in the upper or lower segment of the vagina. A septum in the upper segment does not affect sexual life, while a septum in the lower segment does and requires immediate surgery. The main manifestations are hematocolpos or intermittent menstrual blood outflow.

A vaginal septum refers to an additional vertical membrane within the vagina, often accompanied by a double uterus, double cervix, and ipsilateral renal hypoplasia. Based on anatomical characteristics, this condition can be divided into two types: Incomplete septum: The anterior end of the septum does not reach the vaginal opening, which may cause difficulty or discomfort during sexual intercourse, and obstruct fetal delivery during childbirth. Complete septum: The anterior end of the septum reaches the vaginal opening, usually without discomfort.
