Brainstem edema

Brainstem edema refers to a pathological condition where the water content in brainstem tissue abnormally increases due to various pathogenic factors. The edema is often vasogenic, primarily caused by the disruption of the blood-brain barrier, increased capillary permeability, and extravasation of plasma proteins into the brain extracellular space, leading to localized brain cell swelling. Severe brainstem edema can increase intracranial pressure, reducing blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, which can trigger a series of symptoms and even be life-threatening.
